Algunos damistas tienen un apasionante hobby: "Ser problemista", una práctica común incluso en las publicaciones periódicas. Aquellos jugadores atraídos más por la creación se dedican con entusiasmo a la composición de problemas, que son al planteamiento y resolución en esencia, la poesía del juego de las damas. Se llama problema a una composición en la que las blancas consiguen la victoria en un determinado número reducido de peones -unos 6 por cada bando-, se habla de "miniaturas o miniproblemas". En ellos nunca hay una dama. Tenemos conocimiento de los problemas en este juego a partir de los años 1595 - 1635 de la mano de varios autores: Alonso Guerra, Lorenzo Valls y Juan Timoneda. Frecuentemente estas composiciones están basadas en partidas jugadas realmente, aunque en general son fruto de la imaginación de sus compositores, intentando crear un arte que satisfaga estéticamente tanto al lector como al propio autor.No es suficiente decir simplemente que un problema es una posición en la que las blancas ganan con una serie de jugadas. Hay algo más! Estos golpes deben satisfacer unas pequeñas reglas, las cuales difieren a veces de un país a otro. Observamos algunas de ellas:1.-Las blancas sólo pueden ganar de una única forma, o sea se permite solamente una solución, no pudiendo además cambiar las jugadas que conducirían a la resolución final establecida.2.-Si tras finalizar las blancas un golpe aún no se ha llegado a la conclusión de la partida, al resto de jugadas que se precisan para alcanzar la misma se denomina "final". En ellas las negras habrán de participar de forma muy activa. En un problema una posición de final ha de ser tal que las blancas ganen de una única manera. 3.-En éstos golpes las negras deberán comer durante sus saltos el mayor número de peones, pudiendo elegir incluso la forma de hacerlo, aunque en ocasiones procederán de forma obligada para evitar una derrota inmediata. 4.-La composición debe ser equilibrada; si un color tiene una ventaja posicional, el otro debe compensar éste hecho, por ejemplo poseyendo un peón más. 5.-Cada peón debe tener una función participando activamente, por consiguiente en la composición, tanto en su inicio como en el "motivo final". No se permiten fichas "figurantes". 6.-Un problema ha de estar basado en un tema determinado del juego, con un contenido teórico táctico preciso. El sistema para lograr el triunfo debe plantearse de forma dinámica, además la solución del problema no ha de ser evidente, sobre todo en la primera jugada. 7.-La composición debe cumplir las exigencias de economía. Deben evitarse los golpes donde las negras puedan comer de 1 a 3 peones, pero están obligadas a comer 3, ya que no es económico, porque hay 2 peones de diferencia. Económico es donde las negras pueden comer 1 y 2, 2 y 3, 3 y 4 peones, o sea donde siempre haya un máximo de 1 ficha de diferencia. 8.-Lógicamente la posición inicial ha de ser tal que pueda obtenerse normalmente en una partida cualquiera. Luego de señalar las reglas del juego de damas internacionales, indicaremos varios problemas y características de esta modalidad. Asimismo, veremos que las jugadas se complican más, precisamente porque el jugador debe comer tanto hacia delante como hacia atrás. También describiremos varias combinaciones o golpes que se han presentado en las partidas; ya no son un problema, pero conviene que sepamos algunos golpes que se pueden presentar en las partidas, lo cual nos permitirá evitar, en lo posible, ser víctima de ellos, ya que en muchas ocasiones el jugador acaba con una posición perdedora.
