Sie sind uns allgegenwärtig. Sie werden von den Kritikern geliebt und gehasst zugleich. Sie sind Mainstream und orientieren sich einzig und allein am Erfolg. Blockbuster sind ein Kinoerlebnis und zeigen Menschen das, was sie sehen wollen. Im Prinzip sind sie ein Produkt für den Weltmarkt geworden und lösen deshalb immer wieder Kontroversen über Kunst und Kommerz aus. Aber es zählen nicht alle hergestellten Filme zu der "Königsklasse" Blockbuster. Meine Hausarbeit befasst sich mit der Frage, wann ein Film ein Blockbuster ist bzw. als solcher bezeichnet wird und welche Umstände einen Blockbuster hervorbringen. Das führt zu der These: "Ein Blockbuster ist gezielt herstellbar." Diese Arbeit soll ein klares Bild abzeichnen auf dem die Methoden und Umstände zu erkennen sind, die zu einem Blockbuster geführt haben. Außerdem werde ich nach Definition und Eingrenzung des Begriffs "Blockbuster" über die Geschichte das System hinter den teuersten Filmen unserer Zeit erläutern. Dazu gehört vor allem die Vermarktungsstrategie, aber auch die künstlerische Seite, die sich in dieser Arbeit nur auf den Inhalt beschränkt. Weiter geht es mit einer kurzen Genreanalyse und den technischen Entwicklungen, die das Hollywoodkino stetig hervorbringt und zu einem immer größer werdenden Spektakel macht. Abschließend werde ich die gewonnen Erkenntnisse und Zusammhänge noch einmal resümieren und kritisieren.
