About the Book

The Finite Element (FEA) is powerful method for designing complex structures of frames, shell, or any large plated vessel like a ship subjected to dynamic loads at sea. Application of FEA in the design check of one compartment of the ship structure has now been made compulsory by the International Ship Classification Societies for all ships more than 150 metre in length. Unfortunately, the FEA technologies are monopolized by those 4 or 5 such Societies and there is no text books on the Design of Ship Structure by FEA. Though the FEA design check of one compartment of a ship is mandatory, the principal design of main ship hull girder is still based on the classical Beam Theory, consisting of a wide variety of prescriptive Rules and Regulations developed upon few centuries of ship building experiences and ship structure failures. No wonder, the universities (like IIT, Kharagpur and Madras, and other Institutions) are not directly offering any specific course on application of FEA to Ship Structure. Neither, FEA is a part of the undergraduate syllabus in Naval Architecture till recently. Application of FEA is now predominantly restricted to the civil engineering structures and shell and researchers and Professors of FEM has so far not sought FEA applications to sips. One or two Text Books in the design of ship structure by FEA can dramatically change the situations. The Naval Architecture faculties can take up courses on the design ship structure by FEA, if appropriate Text Books come in the market.
