Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Development and Application of Automatic Monitoring System for Standard Penetration Test in Site Investigation Submitted by YANG WENWEI for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in February 2006 The standard penetration test (SPT) is one of the most frequently used tests for in-situ measurement of soil properties and strength in boreholes. Many useful empirical correlations have been established between the N-value obtained from SPT and the properties of the soils. Therefore, the accuracy of the SPT results is very important. An integrated in-situ digital system has been developed for automatically monitoring and recording the SPT process and results. The system consists of two sets of in-situ digital devices. They are portable and can be non-destructively mounted onto an existing SPT apparatus. The first set of device is the SPT N-value Monitor. It automatically monitors and records the SPT N-value in real time. The automation of the N-value measurement is realized via the measurement of the dynamic rod force and the associated penetration depth due to the impact of each individual hammer blow. The second set of device is the SPT Tip-depth Monitor. It automatically monitors and records in real time the tip depth (H) of the SPT split barrel sampler during its insertion into a borehole immediately before an individual test, or during its subsequent retrieval. The integrated in-situ digital system was verified and validated via actual SPT testing both in laboratory and under field conditions. The field tests were carried out at nine different ground investigation sites in Hong Kong. A total of 136 field SPTs were recorded, monitored and analyzed. The depths (H) of the 136 SPTs ranged from 2 to 52 m. The total number of recorded hammer blows was 10,799, and the recorded SPT N-values ranged from 1 to more than 200. The field tests showed that the software and hardware of the SPT N-value monitor and the SPT tip-depth monitor were accurate, reliable and durable. It is believed that the integrated in-situ monitoring system can be used for automatically monitoring and recording SPT measurements to ensure the testing quality and to obtain accurate results in site investigation. This new system also records detailed data on the SPTs for studying SPT and for extending the applications. From measured axial force in the SPT rod, it is found that the average energy efficiency of SPT with rod length greater than 14 m was about 60%. A set of new rod length correction factors is suggested. Based on tip penetration depth per blow curve, a piecewise linear regression method for estimating the penetration resistance is proposed. It has an intrinsic capability for identifying variations of soil strength within the penetration range of a SPT. Results can also be used to study the effect of disturbance of drilling work and the capability of detecting weakest layers. Finally, the details of rod insertion and retrieval processes are evaluated. DOI: 10.5353/th_b3681191 Subjects: Penetrometer Soil penetration test - Data processing
