Der zweiteilige Band enthalt in 552 Katalogartikeln jene Inschriften, die fur die Altstadt und die historischenFriedhofe von Wittenberg uberliefert sind. Die Sammlung beginnt mit den altesten erhaltenen aus dem 13. Jahrhundert und endet im Jahr 1650. Etwa zwei Drittel aller Inschriften dieses Zeitraums sind nur abschriftlich, d. h. nicht original uberliefert. Die Inschriften Wittenbergs lassen sich hauptsachlich drei Lebensbereichen zuordnen: der im spaten 15. Jahrhundert wiederaufl ebenden Residenzkultur, der 1502 gegrundeten Universitat und der prosperierenden Burgerstadt der Fruhen Neuzeit. Den ersten Hohepunkt im uberlieferungsreichen 16. Jahrhundert bilden die in Messing gegossenen Gedachtnismale fur die Kurfursten Friedrich den Weisen (1486-1525) und Johann den Bestandigen (1525-1532) in der Schlosskirche. Sie sind ein glanzvoller Hohepunkt im Schaff en der Nurnberger Vischer-Werkstatt. Der wichtigste Schopfer von Gemalde-Epitaphien war der Maler Lucas Cranach der Jungere. Von seinen fur die Stadtkirche geschaff enen Epitaphien haben sich allerdings fast nur die Gemalde erhalten, wahrend die dazugehorigen Inschriften nicht original uberliefert sind. Seit der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts wachst die Anzahl der uberlieferten Gedachtnismale fur Angehorige der Universitat. Unter ihnen sind die fur Martin Luther (gestorben 1546) und Philipp Melanchthon (gestorben 1560) sowie die z. T. sehr aufwendigen Epitaphien fur die in Wittenberg bestatteten adligen Studenten hervorzuheben. Die ausserordentlichumfangreichen und anspruchsvollen lateinischen Inschriften des Totengedenkens vergegenwartigen den Bildungsanspruch und die europaweite Vernetzung der akademischen Welt in der Fruhen Neuzeit. Sie bezeugen auch die personellen Verbindungen der ratssassigen Familien zur Universitat, die sich manchmal uber Generationen hinweg verfolgen lassen. Die Universitat war der Ursprungsort der Reformation, die viele epigraphische Spuren hinterlassen hat. Polemische Inschriften reagierten auf den konfessionellen Bekenntnisdruck, der durch kirchenpolitische Richtungswechsel in der zweiten Halfte des 16. Jahrhunderts gerade an Luthers Wirkungsstatte ausgelost wurde. Ausser diesen schlugen sich auch andere Grossereignisse in den Inschriften nieder wie z. B. die Turkenkriege und der Dreissigjahrige Krieg. Daruber hinaus veranschaulichen die Inschriften an den Fassaden und Portalen der Stadt sowie Wandinschriften und Fragmente farbiger Glasfenster ausBurgerhausern die stadtische Kultur Wittenbergs in der Fruhen Neuzeit.
