About the Book

English summary: In his book Die Jugendwerke des Michelangelo, Heinrich Wolfflin aspires to order Michelangelo's early works according to chronological and stylistical criteria by using a new methodology. He scrutinizes their authenticity and determines their importance in influencing the artist's later evolution. By analyzing Michelangelo's works in terms of the scale of their expression, he avoids locating them in relation to biography and cultural history. Through these provocative methods, the young art historian strongly distances himself from traditional means of writing the history of art. Instead he positions himself within the established research on Michelangelo in the late 19th century. Thus, Die Jugendwerke des Michelangelo, just like Wolfflin's earlier Renaissance und Barock, displays the embeddedness of his methodology within a certain era of the historical development of art history. This edition includes an introduction by Joseph Imorde and a critical commentary by Karolina Zgraja and is the first historiographical contextualization of this important study.
