About the Book

English summary: The roll and stamp seals, which were found during the German excavations in modern Iraq between 1903 and 1914, have already been published for the most-part since the 1940s. Through research in the Near Eastern Museum of Berlin, over 100 unpublished Neo-Assyrian exemplars can now be identified, of which include 44 previously unknown scarab and seal amulets. Through the cooperation of the Turkish antiquities administration, moreover, 89 rolled-out seal impressions and stamp specimens from Neo-Assyrian cuneiform sources from the Eski Sark Museum in Istanbul can be included in this collection. All of these exemplars constitute the catalog collection of the first part of this book, which expands the previously known material from Assur. In the second part of the book are all of the Assyrian derived glyptic materials of the Neo-Assyrian period from the 9th to the 7th century B.C. (the original roll and stamp seals on rolled out impressions as well as those surviving fragments from impressions or clay tablets) and arranged according to iconographic perspective into groups and the commentary on motifs, dating, and meaning are reflective of those groups. In this way, a total picture of seal art emerges in which the various traditions of individual seal motifs are made clear. It is no accident that the quartz-ceramic seals with hunting scenes are famous as originals and not as rolled-out impressions. 58 seals and rolled-out seal impressions from Assur, which are dated to others periods and presented in an index so order to complements the material from the Near Eastern Museum in Berlin.
