About the Book

English summary: Among the important historical and religious records of the Ptolemaic period belong the so-called "synodal decrees," which were adopted by synods of Egyptian priests and were, among other things, a means to legitimate the political power of the reigning Macedonian royal couple. These decrees include "Philensis I" and "Philensis II" from the reign of Ptolemy V (205-180 BCE), which has been known for a long time to Egyptologists, but have often taken a back seat in terms of analysis to better known decrees such as the Canopus, Raphia, and Memphis decrees. Historically and also theologically, both decrees were made in the context of a movement that was wide-spread in Upper Egypt from 206 to 186 BCE and which deprived the Ptolemies of control of those regions in favor of two indigenous "counter-kings." Daniel von Recklinghausen presents a new edition of all known hieroglyphic and demotics texts (including the stele with the text of Phlensis I that was found in the Taposiris Maga in 2015) in order to offer a complete edition of these two decrees. The focus of this study is on the mechanisms that enabled the priest to establish the cultic worship of the Macedonian rulers in the temples of the gods. In so doing, the priests integrated into the Egyptian religion the Hellenistic practice of the divine worship of the rulers as a cultic practice. By examining other synodal decrees on the one hand and private inscriptions of the Late Period of Egyptian history and the inscriptions on Ptolemaic temples on the other, the editorial process of these decrees (especially their redaction process) can be better understood but also the process in which kings became gods was clarified and made understandable on the basis of Egyptian theology.
