About the Book

"Diplomats at War: The American Experience." The volume's over-arching aim was to address a straightforward question: What makes an effective wartime diplomatic representative? The volume provides answer in analysis of twenty 'diplomats' - a term broadly conceived. The vast majority of the subjects represented the United States, reflecting the bald facts of international affairs in the latter half of the twentieth century. The volume contributes in an important way as a study of individuals who were operators of national policy often away from the glare of contemporaneous media, and the subsequent attention of historians: there stories are in the main new. The volume also contributes by establishing a framework for analysis that considers broad interpretations of 'Diplomats', 'War', and the 'American Experience' in light of their interrelationship.
