About the Book

How can it be demonstrated, within reasonable bounds, that radionuclides from radioactive waste buried in a repository deep underground will not make their way back to the surface over the next million years and endanger human beings then living there? That is the challenge facing Nirex, the company owned by the main producers of radioactive waste and charged with defining and implementing an acceptable disposal strategy. In order to address it, Nirex is conducting a major research programme involving scientists and engineers from many disciplines. Nirex also invited the Royal Society to conduct an independent review of this programme. This report describes the key elements of the Nirex research programme, compares it to what is happening in other countries, identifies strong points and makes recommendations about strengthening the weaker points. It is being published to stimulate further debate about an issue that is of great national importance. Re orders from the US: personal or company cheques in dollars, calculated at the current rate of exchange, are acceptable to the Society.

Table of Contents:
Summary of the key findings and recommendations: nature of the problem; key scientific issues; Nirex approach to and use of PCPAs; openess and peer review; timing and the Nirex programme; relationships between Nirex and their regulators; longer-term issues; main recommendations. Background. Nature of the problem: characteristics of UK radioactive wastes; management and disposal of UK LLW and ILW; scale and timing of the Nirex programme; UK criteria for long-term safety of radioactive waste repositories; management of UK HLW; summary and comments. International context: deep repository projects in various countries; work of international organizations; underground research laboratories and facilities; summary and comments. Methodologies for post-closure performance assessments: the predictive problem; types of PCPAs and their roles; framework for modelling and calculations; simulations; development of models; development of databases; elicitation of expert judgements; validation; peer review; summary. Evaluation of the geological barrier (geosphere): geological setting of the Sellafield site; approach to evaluation and characterization of the geosphere; the geophysical and borehole programme; interpretation of geological structures and its relationship to hydrogeology; groundwater chemistry; the planned Rock Characterization Facility (RCF); major issues arising from the site characterization programme and ways forward; summary. Engineered features of repository and near-field behaviour. Fluid flow and radionuclide transport in the geosphere. Radionuclide transport in the biosphere and risk calculations for groundwater and gas releases. Future natural events affecting geosphere performance. Risks of human intrusion.
