About the Book

WHAT DO I KNOW ABOUT WOMAN? That was the first question I asked myself when the idea of writing a book about woman flourish like a gardenia in the garden of my head. Well, then I had to base as my foundation a poem I wrote in 1998 while I was working at the library of the CENTRO for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College in New York City. The poem's title said it all. And with this book a small contribution to all woman in the world; "Woman, I applaud your rights." THE WOMAN'S LIBERATION Fifty Thousand women were marching On the streets of New York, Not because the price of pork But for equality with men, This while I was in Puerto Rico Dreaming of girlfriend As a most precious gem Growing in a traditional culture Directed and created by men. So you may say That I have something to say Respecto a este tema*1 Que siempre termina en dilema*2. Without falling with intention I want to bring some light To the wide world of what some call a fight And others will refer as The Woman's Liberation. I want today if you will allow Hear my saying And this is not the talk of the town Because this kind of words Are not usually permitted Even though we have to admitted For the safety of our sanity So not to fall into calamity. Woman I want to applaud your rights For you to curse all men After the experience The cause all your frights, Whoever he was He had no rights To do harm so bad It doesn't matter what It doesn't matter where, I am talking to you Are you aware? Before the war, woman You couldn't really work Your Uncle Sam had a plan, He didn't want you around Just because men said That you couldn't lift More than thirty-one pounds. At your defense came Lorena Webs, Who with words and whips Brought to light a settlement And made the government Loose it's case, And putting away it's swords They had to give you your space While asking if you were thinking That you were getting your way. For your information The facts of this story Are at the library for you to study, I just want to make it simple And let the mind tinkle About this semi-conclusions Regarding the woman's revolution. After some time of observation For some just a little while Uncle Sam came back And while stepping on your back As you contemplated the stars He creates a war And wants you woman to fill the gap Of the man's job position With or without opposition Eighteen million women in the United States Without considering the stakes Took an outside employment As they were constantly reminded That this new feeling they have landed Of the out of the house enjoyment It was nothing to be looked as scary Because the job was only temporary. And since you were the men's spouse The good old Uncle Sam Had to come back And pulling you by the blouse, He said; "War is over" Men had to come back from their mission And needed back their job position, You can go back to the house. Men got their job back With little or none opposition While the television commercial Had a story line That staying home was something special And that everything was going to be fine. (Fragment of Poem) Many women in the past had been in such an incredible ordeal as they had been treated in such a terrible way by unscrupulous men with less brain than a jelly bean that the only way out as soon as they awake from the darkness is to inflict the most terrible pain to their abusers or escape at dawn to a new frontier. Today there are many opportunities available from organizations founded by woman all over the world whose mission is to liberate them form the pain and sorrow and provide a torch so they can find on their own the liberty they deserve. This book will give to the young reader a brief story of what the woman of the past had to go thru for the woman of today to have the peace and liberty they enjoy, and for the young man to learn some history and to stop been such animals and treat the woman with the respect they have always deserved as our complementary companions for life.
