About the Book

Here are thirty short pieces on a great variety of topics. Some are autobiographical, most are opinion pieces, a couple are short stories. Most of them are drawn from direct experience over a very long life. The earliest, "Embarrassment," is about an experience I had when I was sixteen. I remember it vividly now, well over sixty-five years later. When you read it you'll see why. There is also a description of a wedding in which I participated as the stepfather of the groom. No more superfluous role for a man exists. There are articles here on duck hunting, golf, dogs, camping, fly fishing, and the second marriage, as well as something on the benefits of turning eighty. You will note that I do not call them essays. The essay has a formal structure, and an English professor friend has reminded me that these are not essays. Oh, well. I really don't believe you'll care; I didn't.
