Les mythes en general et les mythes grecs en particulier n'ont d'existence que dans les differentes formes poetiques et iconographiques qui les adressent a un public particulier; elles actualisent ces recits pour des circonstances sociales, rituelles et culturelles singulieres. Concues des l'Antiquite comme les produits de techniques artisanales, ces formes conferent aux recits que nous placons sous l'etiquette du mythe une dimension pragmatique. Avec son efficacite d'ordre a la fois esthetique et politique, cette poetique inscrit ces recits en des memoires culturelles dynamiques, variant d'une cite a l'autre. En regime polytheiste, ces recits poetiques, relatifs au passe heroique de la communaute, sont souvent associes a des fondations de culte et a des rituels auxquels ils servent d'aition; ils legitiment ainsi une histoire et des institutions politiques. Par les techniques intellectuelles de poetes consideres comme des sophoi, par le biais de differentes formes de performance poetique (figurees et discursives), par la pragmatique de formes esthetiques qui les constituent en univers de croyance et en memoire collective, par les pratiques rituelles dont leur enonciation fait partie, les mythes grecs definissent des identites politiques et religieuses amenees a changer suivant la conjoncture historique. En France en particulier, l'approche des mythes grecs a ete fortement marquee par le structuralisme. Sous l'influence de la linguistique, on a ete d'une part sensible a la syntaxe de recits qui sont relatifs au passe heroique de la communaute; on en a ainsi offert une serie d'analyses narratologiques. D'autre part, dans la dimension semantique, on a souvent reduit leurs univers de representations culturelle a des oppositions binaires (le cru/le cuit, le meme/l'autre, le masculin/le feminin). Il s'agit desormais de replacer ces formes narratives dans un contexte d'enonciation qui correspond a des performances ritualisees. Seule la prise en compte de la forte dimension pragmatique qui decoule de leur forme poetique est en mesure d'en faire apparaitre les effets de sens dans un contexte rituel et culturel requerant une approche d'ordre anthropologique.
