About the Book

This text combines a firm theoretical/philosophical orientation to both normal and atypical development of infants and toddlers with practical ideas for teaching and working with families. This book provides the link between research and practice to guide students in understanding key principles of early development in infants and toddlers with disabilities. It also prepares the students for working in the fields of early intervention. Unlike other texts, this book integrates theory and practice from multiple disciplines. Early Intervention Services for Infants, Toddlers, and Their Families emphasizes that service providers need to have a firm foundation in typical child development before being able to fully understand and develop programs for children with unique needs. It advocates that children with disabilities be served in the natural environments. This text also promotes the acknowledgement of family members as partners in all aspects of service delivery and supports the role of service providers as advocates for both children and their families. Furthermore, it is this team, composed of family members and service providers, who is jointly responsible for designing and implementing services that abide by the highest ethical standards and thereby successfully serve young children with disabilities.
