The community was founded by a group of 110 enslaved Africans who were captured and brought to the United States on the last known slave ship, named 'The Clotilda', in 1860. After the Civil War and emancipation, the freed slaves were technically free but unable to come back to Africa and instead formed a distinct identity and culture, maintaining their African traditions and creating their own social institutions. They created their own Africa right in the United States and named it Africatown where descendants of 'The Clotilda' live to date.
