GENERAL INTRODUCTION Abstract of thesis entitled ECOLOGY OF COMMERCIALLY IMPORTANT STOMATOPODS IN HONG KONG Submitted by LUI King-yung Karen for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2005 Stomatopoda (Subphylum Crustacea, Class Malacostraca), or mantis shrimps, are common predators in shallow coastal waters. Despite their high abundance and importance as a fisheries resource, the life history and ecological significance of tropical stomatopods are largely unknown. This study investigates the biodiversity, life history and ecology of stomatopods in Hong Kong. Monthly trawl surveys conducted in the oceanic, eastern and the more estuarine, western waters of Hong Kong, between August 2003 and May 2005 revealed at least nine stomatopod species (Family Squillidae) which dominated the crustacean assemblage, accounting for 37% of total numbers and 48% of the total biomass. Analysis of size frequency distributions showed that the four most common species (Oratosquilla oratoria, Oratosquillina interrupta, Miyakea nepa and Harpriosquilla harpax) grow fast, mature at a young age and have a short lifespan, exhibiting opportunistic life history strategies. Populations of the four species generally consisted of 2-3 cohorts and were female-biased, except for H. harpax which had up to 5 cohorts and an approximately equal sex ratio. The four species bred year-round, but breeding and recruitment peaked in summer and winter respectively. Growth rates were similar between seasons, although more new- moults were found in summer. H. harpax showed the slowest growth but the greatest size. O. oratoria and O. interrupta exhibited different growth between sites ii CHAPTER 1. GENERAL INTRODUCTION and were significantly larger in western waters. Longevity of these species ranged from 2-16 months. Stomach content analysis confirmed that the four stomatopods were primarily predators, consuming a wide range of prey but with Crustacea as the most abundant food. Harpiosquilla harpax, however, consumed a higher proportion of fish than the other species, implying trophic partitioning of resources. A high percentage of inorganic sediment (up to 28%) was observed, suggesting a supplementary, deposit-feeding habit. Dietary composition also varied between area and season but not sex, suggesting that diet depends upon the availability of prey. The population genetics of Oratosquilla oratoria were elucidated in six populations, four from Hong Kong and two from the South China Sea, using sequence analysis of the mitochondrial DNA control region (D-loop). Generally, nucleotide diversities were low (
