Auszug: Johannes Paul II. (lateinisch, burgerlicher Name Karol Jozef Wojty a; * 18. Mai 1920 in Wadowice, Polen; 2. April 2005 in der Vatikanstadt) war vom 16. Oktober 1978 bis zu seinem Tod 26 Jahre und 5 Monate lang Papst der romisch-katholischen Kirche. Ein langeres Pontifikat ist nur fur Pius IX. belegt. Johannes Paul II. war der erste Slawe auf dem Papstthron. Ihm wird eine massgebliche Rolle bei der Beendigung des Sozialismus in seinem Heimatland Polen zugeschrieben. Am 1. Mai 2011 sprach sein Nachfolger, Papst Benedikt XVI., ihn in Rom selig. Karol Wojty a wurde am 18. Mai 1920 in Wadowice, einer Kleinstadt bei Krakau, geboren. Seine Eltern waren der ehemalige k. u. k. Unteroffizier Karol, der als Schneider tatig war, und Emilia, geb. Kaczorowska. Die Mutter starb, als Karol neun Jahre alt war. Im Alter von 12 Jahren verlor er seinen alteren Bruder Edmund, der am 5. Dezember 1932 als junger Mediziner in Bielitz (heutiges Bielsko-Bia a) an Scharlach starb. Seine Schwester lernte er nie kennen, da sie noch vor seiner Geburt verstarb. In seiner Kindheit war Wojty a sehr sportlich und spielte oft Fussball als Torwart. Er war ein Fan des polnischen Clubs KS Cracovia (Sportklub Krakau). In seinen pragenden Jahren wurde er durch zahlreiche Kontakte mit der lebhaften und bluhenden Judischen Gemeinde in Wadowice beeinflusst. Oft wurden Fussballspiele in der Schule zwischen einem judischen und einem katholischen Team organisiert.
