Das Prototyping oder der Modellbau ist einer der wichtigsten Schritte zur Fertigstellung eines Produktdesigns. Er hilft bei der Konzeptualisierung eines Entwurfs. Vor Beginn der eigentlichen Produktion wird in der Regel ein Prototyp hergestellt und getestet. Es werden die RP-Verfahren Stereolithografie (SL), Selektives Lasersintern (SLS), Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) und Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) beschrieben. Beim selektiven Lasersintern (SLS) wird feines Polymerpulver wie Polystyrol, Polycarbonat oder Polyamid usw. (20 bis 100 Mikrometer Durchmesser) mit einer Walze auf dem Substrat verteilt. Vor dem Start des CO2-Laserscannens zum Sintern einer Scheibe wird die Temperatur des gesamten Bettes durch Infrarotheizung knapp unter den Schmelzpunkt angehoben, um die thermische Verformung (Curling) zu minimieren und das Verschmelzen mit der vorherigen Schicht zu erleichtern. Der Laser wird so moduliert, dass nur die Körner, die in direktem Kontakt mit dem Strahl stehen, beeinflusst werden. Sobald das Laserscanning eine Schicht ausgehärtet hat, wird das Bett abgesenkt und die Pulverzufuhrkammer angehoben, so dass eine gegenläufige Walze eine gleichmäßige Pulverschicht auf dem Bauplatz verteilen kann.
