Inhaltsangabe: Problemstellung: Kriege sind so alt wie die Menschheit. Ihre Folgen auch. In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll eine zwangsläufige, vielfach erforschte und immer wieder rätselhafte Auswirkung militärischer Einsätze dargestellt werden: der Stressschaden. Immer wieder hat es die Menschheit für notwendig erachtet Interessen, seien es die einer Person oder Gruppe mit Gewalt durchzusetzen. Diese Praxis hat sich bis in unsere Zeit unverändert erhalten. Die Unterschiede zu den frühen Formen der Kriegsführung liegen in der hohen Mechanisierung seit dem Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg 1860 - 1865 und der Elektronisierung seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges und Beginn des nuklearen Wettlaufes zwischen den USA und der damaligen UdSSR. Dazwischen liegen etwa 100 Jahre der Kriegsindustrialisierung und der Stahlgewitter mit ihren unauslöschlichen Folgen. Der Soldat als Mensch - Mittel der Kriegsführung spielt dabei eine zentrale Rolle. Er ist der Träger von militärischen Rollen, Funktionen und Idealen die auf seine Träger zurückstrahlen und sie als Individuum für nicht existent erklären. Am Ende zählen nur Sieg oder Niederlage, Verlierer sind aber unweigerlich alle. Jeder Schuss den man auf einen anderen abfeuert und jede Kugel der man entgeht, das Entsetzen, der Verrat, die Schreie, die Flammen und die Verwesung reißen von Mal zu Mal größere Löcher in die Seele des Soldaten bis er nicht mehr kann. Eine Schlacht oder einen Krieg gewinnt oder verliert man im Kollektiv, aber leiden ist etwas individuelles, privates, einsames. Dieses Leiden entbindet den Soldaten jedoch nicht von seiner Verpflichtung im Kollektiv weiter korrekt zu funktionieren wenn der Krieg vorüber ist. Der Bundesrepublik ist diese Erfahrung von der Kriegsgeneration abgesehen bis jetzt erspart geblieben.
