El andén del destino inaugura una serie con el inquietante título FICCIONES REALISTAS DE CUBA. Inquietante por tres razones: una, porque serán obras narrativas con las mismas características de una novela, aunque de menor extensión, de manera que puedan disfrutarse no sólo en los hogares, sino incluso a la espera del vuelo de un avión o mientras se viaja en el Metro; la otra razón, porque en la brevedad de la historia se podrá indagar con profundidad en tramas que llevarán a los personajes hacia estados límites. Y la tercera porque siempre el espacio fabular será una mítica isla de Cuba muy parecida a la de la realidad en algunas aristas del texto. En el caso de El andén del destino, su trama sigue a un escritor que viaja a La Habana desde el interior del país para entrevistarse con su agente literario, con el propósito de negociar su última novela con una editorial cubana y planear un viaje promocional a Barcelona. Cuando se encuentra en la habitación del hotel donde se hospeda, se dedica a espiar a sus vecinos y cree descubrir en ellos a un proxeneta y su jinetera (como se les llama a las prostitutas cubanas en la actualidad). El escritor, como narrador y personaje principal, dice permanecer alojado en un hotel dedicado al llamado turismo internacional en Cuba, aunque el lector podrá descubrir otra realidad mientras va avanzando en la lectura. Resulta de interés para el lector considerar el disfrute de este relato, toda vez que su ritmo es ágil y trepidante. Como una muestra, ofrecemos un fragmento del comienzo del relato: "Durante el atardecer de mi primer día en La Habana, recostado contra la ventana del hotel, me entretengo mirando hacia el malecón. Pasan gran cantidad de ciclistas y algunos automóviles; el sol aún alumbra tenuemente contra el mar, desatando con sus rayos un arco iris que al ser reflejado por las aguas me deja deslumbrado. Regulo el aire acondicionado porque siento que las gotas de sudor corren por todo mi cuerpo, regreso hasta la cama y me acuesto sin desvestir.Entrecierro los ojos y escucho a la sordina una conversación que viene desde la habitación aledaña a la mía. Oigo apenas unos susurros, voces apagadas, quizás hasta una risa entre palabra y palabra. La risa en unas oportunidades es de una mujer, en otras es un hombre quien prorrumpe en una carcajada estentórea, plena de vitalidad y alegría. Boca arriba en mi cama, mientras intento encender un cigarro ensalivado por culpa del fósforo negado a prenderse, observo con toda calma esta habitación donde me encuentro. (...)De pronto, el hombre comienza a rugir improperios; lo imagino saltando contra la muchacha (estoy convencido de que se trata de una muchacha: el tono de su voz es suave, claro y uniforme; las mujeres mayores en general hablan de una manera quebradiza, ronca; en cambio, las jóvenes poseen una voz atiplada parecida a la de un muchacho impúber) para apretar alguna parte de su cuerpo, quizás un brazo, violento y furioso: estaba engañándolo y a él no había mujer que lo hiciera el comemierda; ella muy bien lo conocía; aunque la amaba como jamás había adorado a mujer alguna, no le iba a perdonar una traición. Le recordaba con insistencia su credo moral como hombre, la situaba en la disyuntiva de escoger entre un ambiente rodeado de comodidades y aquel en que vivía antes, sórdido, lleno de gritos callejeros en un solar asqueroso, obligada a asistir durante las mañanas a la escuela y por las tardes a dedicar el tiempo disponible en ocupaciones domésticas rutinarias y agobiantes. La muchacha lloraba y hasta podría asegurar que de rodillas frente al hombre pedía perdón. Él ya no gritó más; mantuve pegada una oreja contra la puerta cancelada desde ambas habitaciones, mientras oprimía la colilla contra el cenicero de cristal labrado que descansaba encima de la amplia cómoda, y escuché el detenerse de los sollozos y el inicio de unos jadeos acompasados".
