About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

An excellent and intimate biographical work about Elena Poniatowska, edited and updated, one whose English edition was nominated to the Pulitzer Prize. Prologue by Carlos Fuentes

Elena is a passionate, socially conscious writer who is widely known in Mexico and who deserves to be better known everywhere else. She has penned vital works of literature and journalism in Mexico, like: Hasta no verte Jesús mío / Here s to You, Jesusa!, La noche de Tlatelolco / Massacre in Mexico, Querido Diego, te abraza Quiela / Dear Diego, De noche vienes / At Night You Come, Tinísima / Tinisima, La piel del cielo / The Sky's Skin, and Leonora / Leonora. She is an activist, hers is a voice speaking up about social injustice, advocate of women's rights; Elena Poniatowska is, above all, a fierce woman, owner of a sensitive yet bold, energetic, and powerful voice. Poniatowska granted Schuessler access to fifty years of personal files, and his portrait is itself a literary collage befitting her, where we see the life of a simple yet determined woman, her fairy tale-like European origins and her bumpy family history; relationships with authors and artists of Mexican culture as well as never revealed before aspects of her personal life: stories about her childhood, her great loves, her mentors in journalism and literature, her political life, the great tragedies she faced, and her determination to denounce government abuse.
