Submitted by Wong Chun Leung for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in August 2007 The construction of the dichotomous categories of colonizer and colonized were fundamental to British colonial rule. Predicated on notions of difference, these categories were constructed to accentuate the difference of races. This thesis is a study of British elite constructions of the categories of "colonizer" and "colonized" through the study of colonial policy. The thesis argues that these constructs were not a mere manifestation of racial thinking by the British elite, but also indicated deep-rooted prejudices defined in terms of class. Focusing on themes underemphasized in the literature on Hong Kong, this thesis will examine how "colonizer" and "colonized" were constructed by studying British elite representations of sex across racial divide. This thesis argues that it was the intention of the British elite to use this to differentiate their colonizer status not only from the racial 'other' but also lower class Europeans. Hygiene was an important concept used to distinguish the colonizer from the 'other'. The definition of the British elite, however, was not constructed without challenges. Towards the beginning of the new century, racial regulation was intensified following the failure of the British elite to deal with the threat posed by the Chinese and Eurasian bourgeoisie to colonizer privileges in residential and education space. This intensification represented the British elite response to a reaffirmation of their colonizer status. In the unsettled political context of the 1920s, the definitions of colonizer and colonized seemed to have begun to blur following increasing cooperation between the British elite and Chinese bourgeoisie. Motivated by their common interest to defend the colony from anti-colonial forces, this seeming racial rapprochement did not, however, alter the basic racial component in British elite definitions of colonizer. With the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong, the traditional colonial categories based on the fundamental divergences of race were reasserted. (299 words) DOI: 10.5353/th_b3963404
