About the Book

This worktext, which covers all aspects of traditional English grammar, is intended to help students gain a more formal understanding of the many facets of English grammar and mechanics. The book is distinguished by its constant emphasis on how grammar is applied to clear writing. Because of this emphasis, exercises are always in the context of longer pieces of discourse and show that grammar always functions in a context beyond the sentence. English Grammar in Context takes a building block approach by covering words, phrases, clauses, and sentence structure in its first four parts. Units on punctuation and errors follow for easy reference and flexible use. The text features an array of pedagogy, more than any comparable book. Each chapter begins with a pretest to allow students to assess their own ability on a particular topic. A progression of increasingly challenging exercises follows, and each chapter concludes with a summary.
