Abstract: Abstract This dissertation was written based on a small-scale study using an elicitation approach in order to investigate students' English-Cantonese code mixing behaviour in Hong Kong. The study was carried out in May 2004 in a local secondary school. Fourteen senior secondary students were asked not to speak English for one day, to complete a language diary and to attend a focus group interview. The study investigates their motivations for code mixing. Apart from discerning their motivations, the study also tries to find out how their education background, with reference to the medium of instruction, affects their code mixing behaviour. The study sets out to answer the following questions: What are the motivations for code-mixing among secondary school students in Hong Kong? What are the differences between the level of 'inconvenience' in the 'purist task' experienced by participants with Chinese as the medium of instruction (CMI) or English as the medium of instruction (EMI) background? The analysis of the findings reveals that the motivations for code mixing among senior secondary students are similar to those proposed by the university students of Li and Tse (2002)'s study. One possible difference is that the secondary students in this study are concerned more about the social and pragmatic factors for communication, while the university students also consider the linguistic factors. Another area of concern in this study is the influence of the medium of instruction. Results reveal that students' CMI or EMI background does not affect their use of code mixing. Instead, the language that students are using for learning now has a great impact on their code mixing behaviour. Students who need to learn using EMI now, regardless of their CMI or EMI background in the past years, tend to find it natural and unavoidable to use mixed code, especially in relation to academic and technical terms. Even those with a CMI background now find it impossible to use pure Cantonese, even though they have learnt all the technical terms in Chinese in the past five years.
