Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Englishes in Hong Kong: Students' awareness of, attitudes towards accent differences and the intelligibility of accents of English Submitted by Lam Chun Hin for the Degree of Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong August, 2007 This dissertation examines Hong Kong students' awareness of, attitudes towards accent differences and the intelligibility of accents of English in Hong Kong. This study involved 65 secondary school students. An accent recognition test was used to investigate whether they could identify various native and non-native accents of English, mostly commonly heard in Hong Kong. A questionnaire was administered to the students to explore their attitudes towards accents. Four comprehension listening tests were used to examine which accent would be understood best by the subjects. Previous research suggests that Hong Kong students can easily recognize the local accent of English. The findings of this study confirm this. The questionnaire confirms that most students would prefer the native accents to the local accent as a learning model. The listening tests show that the British accent is better comprehended followed by the Hong Kong, Australian and American accents. It seems that familiarity with an accent is an important factor when it comes to comprehension.
