INTRODUÇÃOEm fase de preparação, durante as pesquisas desenvolvidas sobre os temas abordados neste livro, podia sentir as vozes daquelas mulheres miseráveis dos bordéis das Américas e da África sussurrando no meu ouvido. Ouvia também as vozes dos milhões de judeus que morreram nos campos da morte durante o Holocausto.Minha pesquisa se centrou sobre o livro "Baile de Máscaras" de Beatriz Kushnir, "The Avengers" de Rich Cohen, "Hitler's Silent Partners" e "Bodies and Souls" de Isabel Vincent, além dos Yad Vashem Studies - vários fascículos. Do ponto de vista ficcional muito me ajudaram os livros "Scum" e "Shosha" de Isaac Bashevis Singer, "O Ciclo das Águas" de Moacir Scliar, além da feliz descoberta da obra de Sholem Aleichem: "Selected Stories of Sholom Aleichem", "Wandering Stars", "Favorite Tales of Sholom Aleichem" e, finalmente "Old County Tales", nos quais se vive e respira o desaparecido mundo do schtetl (vilarejos rurais da Europa Central e Oriental onde muitos judeus viveram do século XVI ao século XX).É claro que as memórias familiares também tiveram um papel importante tanto na motivação para escrever como pelos fatos sombrios que me foram relatados. Estamos num momento em que os sobreviventes dessas tragédias já se foram quase todos e a tendência para o esquecimento vai se fortalecendo inexoravelmente. Quem ouve falar hoje em dia daqueles que foram queimados nas fogueiras da Inquisição? Não são histórias bonitas, mas nem por isso devem ser esquecidas.Os partisans (guerrilheiros) e os vingadores do final da Guerra demoraram a dar seu testemunho, por pudor, para não dar argumentos aos inimigos ou, quiçá, por medo de julgamento. Viveram os horrores da guerra, os massacres perpetrados contra os judeus e no final puderam ter algum pequeno sabor de vingança.Certamente não serei eu que irá julgá-los. Para mim, só o fato de terem sobrevivido aos pogroms (pilhagem e assassinato de judeus), aos massacres durante a guerra, aos ghettos imundos, à fome matematicamente planejada e aos campos da morte já os faz verdadeiros heróis.O que me fez escrever este livro foi retomar uma narrativa que não deve ser esquecida e, com a liberdade que a ficção permite, abordar certos aspectos não confirmados oficialmente. Os judeus da Ucrânia, Bielo-Rússia, Países Bálticos e Polônia, principalmente, viviam em terras de senhores feudais. A tehu, ou a região onde o tsar permitia a presença de judeus, foi onde floresceu a rica tradição hassídica, o teatro e a literatura iidische. Era, todavia, uma região de grande miséria. Seriam os "camponeses sem terra" que conhecemos no Brasil. Entretanto, a luta pela posse da terra nem passava pela cabeça dessa população, constantemente massacrada em pogroms selvagens e expulsa rotineiramente de seus lares ao bel prazer do conde ou barão que, entretempo, cobrava impostos extorsivos. Não sobrava quase nada para o schtetl.Outro aspecto ao qual me concedi liberdade ficcional foi o apoio logístico que homens como Max, o cafetão protagonista dessa história, íntimo do submundo paulista, carioca e portenho, deu aos vingadores que caçaram os criminosos nazistas em fuga. Em minha ficção tal apoio não é gratuito, mas tem um sentido moral. Não basta caçá-los e, eventualmente, matá-los. Há que se recuperar o butim que os criminosos roubaram de suas vítimas na Europa. Max não pensava no sentido moral de seu gesto. Estava somente aproveitando uma oportunidade que a sorte e a esperteza lhe colocaram ao alcance.Finalmente, o livro é uma homenagem ao meu pai que mal tive a oportunidade de conhecer, mas que falou comigo em meus pensamentos e que também veio dessas paragens longínquas.
