In eine Zeit des scheinbaren Verschwindens des Raumes setzen die Autoren zwei Romane, die sich mit dem Thema der Exploration, der Urbarmachung und Entdeckung von Räumen auseinandersetzen. Der Leser wird in beiden Erzählungen in das 19. Jahrhundert zurückversetzt und damit in eine Zeit, die als Beginn der wirtschaftlichen, politischen und kulturellen Globalisierung gelten kann. Die wirtschaftliche Industrialisierung, der Imperialismus und die politischen Strömungen des Liberalismus, des Nationalismus und des Sozialismus, die Urbanisierung und die Verkehrsrevolution, die zu einer erhöhten Mobilität der Menschen führen sowie die Revolution der Wissenschaften und der Technik, lassen allesamt ihren Beginn in das 19. Jahrhundert rückdatieren. Die Haupterzählstränge des Romans Die Vermessung der Welt bilden die Südamerika-Expedition Alexander von Humboldts zwischen 1799 und 1804 sowie die "geistige Expedition" Friedrich Gauß´, der zwischen Göttingen, Hannover und Berlin pendelnd, in unbekannte mathematische und physikalische Sphären vordringt. In Ransmayrs Werk bilden die Haupterzählstränge einmal die österreichisch-ungarische Nordpolarexpedition (Payer-Weyprecht-Expedition) zwischen 1872 und 1874 sowie die Geschichte von Josef Mazzini, der 100 Jahre nach der Payer-Weyprecht Expedition auf den Spuren derselben im ewigen Eis verschwindet. Die Analyse von Kehlmanns Roman nimmt dabei einen größeren Raum ein, da durch sie viele Grundbegrifflichkeiten bereits geklärt werden.
