Excerpt: ...(b) The composition (theme and letter) will require the greatest care and attention, but a scheme of graduated exercises, beginning at the simplest, will assist a little. We cannot at all advise the use of skeleton or elliptical helps, these are unnecessary crutches, that will cramp the limbs of the intelligently healthy, and make chronic, lameness that was only temporary. One of the best plans known to us is for the teacher to write essays on the B.B., taking the locus standi of a child, and entirely without previous preparation put down any theme suggested by the children oa the spot. It may be asked: "Could every teacher do this?" and we answer: The cruder the attempt the better, particularly in the early stages, as the children will have less to imitate, and so be emboldened to attempt the sooner. (c) The physical geography is an excellent addition to the Code, and, as a general rule, we may say that only the more intelligent of the children remain for these last examinations, the great difficulties experienced on opening out the subject will soon disappear, thereby enabling the teacher, with the aid of a good text book and cards, to do ample justice to it, and make it of valuable service in after years, when the children are doing battle with the great world, and we who remain at the grindstone have but a list of names in old musty registers to remind us of past joys and sorrows. 12.
