This dissertation, "Factors Affecting the Work Motivation of Middle Managers in School: a Case Study" by Yu-shing, Kennedy, Au Yeung, 歐陽汝城, was obtained from The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong) and is being sold pursuant to Creative Commons: Attribution 3.0 Hong Kong License. Abstract: ABSTRACT This study aims to investigate the perception of school middle managers on the identified factors which affect their work motivation and examine their actual work motivation in the case school. This research is a single case study. Four subject heads from humanities subjects and four functional committee coordinators from student-affairs sector of the case school are chosen as informants. A qualitative research approach is adopted in which most of the data collection is conducted through semi-structured interviews with the informants. It was found that subject heads and committee coordinators have some similarities and differences on their perceptions on the identified factors affecting work motivation. Similarities appear in factors like advancement, personal life, achievement and styles of decision-making while differences appear in factors like recognition and school policy and administration. It is important to note that both of them view achievement and recognition as the most important two factors that will affect their work motivation, though the fact that they vary differently in the other factors. It was found that functional committee coordinators in general have higher work motivation than the subject heads in the case school. The former attributes this to the unique nature of their work, that is, work related to extra-curricular activities, guidance and counseling, disciplinary nurturing of students while the latter claims that it is the routine management work in the subject panels that lowers their work motivation. Besides, both of them claim that when they work with high motivation, it is usually associated with a feeling of happiness and satisfaction throughout and after the working process. By comparing the research findings with some of the local studies on work motivation in secondary schools, it is found that there is a high degree of consistency in most of the factors. This includes the factors interpersonal relations, work itself, achievement, recognition, income and supervision. However, there are two factors which are not very consistent with the local studies.
