Excerpt: ... former position was unknown; this could not be done, however, until his affairs should be sufficiently wound up to ascertain if any means of living were left from the wreck; and before this was effected he was brought to see that it was a braver act to battle on where he had lived, after giving unquestionable proof of his honourable conduct, and his earnest desire to satisfy every lawful claim by withholding no part of his property. When his affairs had been fully examined, it was conceded that he had been more the victim of others--the deluded more than the deluder; and the only just ground of blame that attached to him arose out of the false appearances he had maintained to the last, in the exercise of a forlorn hope to ride out the storm. A few more weeks passed by in the old home, and if Harriet's time had not been so fully taken up by her new duties, and her heart so entirely thrown into them, they would have appeared twice as long as they really were. Excitement was not lacking; but it was far different from that which had once marked her passing hours. It was a great comfort that Mrs. Boswell had so far recovered as to enable them to look forward to her removal before the preliminary steps must be taken for the disposal of the furniture, with all the articles that taste and money had combined to scatter over that fine mansion. As yet, no settled plan had been decided on, but if, in the meantime, an entire change could be procured for her, it was considered as a very desirable thing.
