About the Book

Computational Mechanics is a relatively new field of research which combines rigorously developed numerical methods with the basic laws of mechanics, be it solid or fluid mechanics. The development of computer science and technology during the last three decades has made it possible to solve rather complex mechanical problems from first principles, thereby bridging the prevailing gap between the fundamental equations of mechanics and industrial needs in such disparate fields of application as hydropower turbines and aluminium extrusion. The advent of Computational Mechanics, first primarily as a research area and thereafter as an effective and reliable means of engineering design analysis, has now made it possible to discard the often questionable rules-of-thumb and semi-empirical criteria used so far in many industries. Still, however, insight in the fundamental laws of mechanics is essential in order to perform and understand the outcome of a computerised analysis of a mechanical process or system.

Table of Contents:
Fluid flows in welding and other materials processes; Misconceptions in utilizing numerical simulations in the engineering design process; Modeling of flow, flow balance and shape in aluminium extrusion with a Lagrangian FEM code; Heat and stress development during chemical hydration in concrete; How modern programming techniques can greatly simplify the development of parallel simulation codes in computational mechanics; An engineering methodology taking into account the effect of local damage on the global behavior of surface cracked shell structures; Stretch bending of aluminum extrusions; Turbomachinery flow calculations at highly off-design conditions; Computational challenges in MEMS; CFD simulation and installation effects for ultrasonic flow meters in pipes with bends; Fluid structure interaction in the case of two independent cylinders in vortex induced vibrations; Industrial applications of computational fluid dynamics; Mechanical modelling of quasi-brittle shear fracture; Arcweld fe simulation of large aluminium structures; Numerical modelling of extrusion of aluminium: challenges and todays approaches and results from an industrial perspective; EXTRUD: A coupled heat and flow solver for 3D simulation of aluminium extrusion; Propagation of large destructive waves; CFD modeling of bubble driven flow; Hydraulic fracturing simulation with numerical manifold method; A fem study of biomechanical parameters on femur; Lifetime prediction of gas turbine components with thermal barrier coatings, using micromechanics; Load transfer in ship wave analysis; Green water computed with a quasi-spectral method for potential flow; 3D simulation of time dependent flow behind bluff bodies; Numerical simulation of turbulence by spectral element methods; Some industrial and academic challenges related to process and product development of structural extrusion-based components for the automotive industry; Computational modelling of Nitric oxide formation in biomass combustion; A boundary element method for nonlinear fluid sloshing; Notch Fracture of MEMS sensors made of single crystal silicon.
