Cet ouvrage est une référence absolue dans la bibliothèque de la Franc-maçonnerie a été très largement diffusé auprès des Francs-maçons français depuis sa parution entre 1893 et 1922 pour chacun des trois volumes (I. L'Apprenti, II. Le Compagnon, III. Le Maître) ici réunis dans cette nouvelle édition en un seul et même ouvrage. La posture adoptée par Oswald Wirth est d'éviter le pédagogisme pour privilégier la pédagogie des apprentis et, plus largement, de tous ceux qui s'intéressent de près ou de loin à la Franc-maçonnerie. Ce n'est donc pas un livre réservé aux seuls initiés, bien au contraire: s'il est un guide pratique pour l'Apprenti qui souhaite être initié à la philosophie, la méthode, les rites et les symboles de la Franc-maçonnerie, il est aussi destiné au plus grand nombre de lecteur curieux de comprendre les différentes traditions des rites et des obédiences maçonniques.
About the Author: Oswald Wirth (5 août 1860 à Brienz, Suisse - 9 mars 1943 à Mouterre-sur-Blourde, France) a été le secrétaire de Stanislas de Guaita, et dessina en collaboration avec lui un Tarot, réédité depuis sous le nom de Tarot de Wirth. Ce Tarot est expliqué et commenté dans son ouvrage Le Tarot des imagiers du Moyen Âge, devenu un classique. Il fut initié en franc-maçonnerie le 28 janvier 1884 dans la loge La Bienfaisance Châlonnaise du GODF. À son retour à Paris, il devient le secrétaire de Stanislas de Guaita et s'affilie à la loge Les Amis Triomphants. Insatisfait, en 1889, il s'affilie à la loge Le Travail et les Vrais Amis Fidèles de la Grande Loge symbolique écossaise, dont il sera plusieurs fois le vénérable maître. Cette loge rejoindra la Grande Loge de France, probablement fin 1898. Il a aussi été martiniste et membre de la Société des Philalèthes (Philalèthes Society) et un des fondateurs de la revue Le Symbolisme. Selon Roger Dachez et Alain Bauer: En publiant dès la fin des années 1890, en volumes successifs sa célébrissime série, La franc-maçonnerie rendue intelligible à ses adeptes puis Les mystères de l'art royal, Wirth assurera pendant plus de quarante ans un véritable magistère des études de symbolique. On lui doit ainsi plusieurs ouvrages: La Franc-maçonnerie rendue intelligible à ses adeptes, sa philosophie, son objet, sa méthode, ses moyens, trois tomes, Paris, t.
