Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Fundamental Shear Behavior of Saturated Loose Fills of Completely Decomposed Rocks Submitted by Zhai Yang for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in May 2000 This thesis focuses on the analysis and modelling of the fundamental shear behavior of saturated loose fills of completely decomposed rocks. Completely decomposed rocks are the main fill materials in Hong Kong. Because of the absence of effective construction standards, a large number of fill slopes constructed before 1970's are composed of loose fill materials with hardly any compaction effort. Many slope failures happened during severe rainstorms, of which some were disastrous. It is because there are still a lot of such fill slopes existing in the area, that this study arises. A comprehensive triaxial testing program has been carried out on remoulded specimens of completely decomposed granites (CDG) and completely decomposed volcanic (CDV) from different sites in Hong Kong. Consolidated undrained, drained and stress path controlled triaxial compression tests, together with some tests on unsaturated specimens, were conducted. Different consolidation pressures, initial moisture contents, consolidation stress ratios and strain rates were used in the program. Four reconstituted specimens were also tested.Strain softening, phase transformation and strain hardening were observed in the testing program. The steady state line on the plot of deviatoric stress versus mean effective normal stress is unique for each of the soils within the test parameters and conditions in this study. However, on the plot of void ratio versus mean effective normal stress there is no uniqueness for the steady state line. Several steady state lines appear on the plot. The location of the steady state line depends on factors such as consolidation pressure, initial moisture content, consolidation stress ratio, strain rate, drainage condition, etc. There is a peak state line which is lower than the steady state line on the plot of deviatoric stress versus mean effective normal stress for loose fills of completely decomposed rocks. Normalization methods taking into account of the relative compaction and the initial moisture content have been proposed to produce a single steady state line and a single peak state line on the plot of void ratio versus mean effective normal stress. Based on the test results, the stress strain behavior of loose fills of fully decomposed rocks is modelled. The relationships among the deviatoric stress, mean effective normal stress and void ratio at the steady state and peak state are developed. The stress strain relationships describing both strain hardening and strain softening are expressed with different mathematical functions. The pore water pressure under undrained conditions and the volume change under drained conditions are characterized with mathematical functions. All the parameters included in the model can be obtained from conventional triaxial tests. The comparison of the predicted results and measured results shows that the model is applicable to the loose fills of completely decomposed rocks.
