Ce livre unique comprend une biographie détaillée de Edmond ABOUT(1828-1884) mais aussi une de ces oeuvres: " Germaine," avec un résumé .(annoté et illustré) l'Auteur: Edmond François Valentin About est né le 14 février 1828 à Dieuze. Fils d'épicier, il fait ses études au petit séminaire, puis entre au lycée Charlemagne où il devient un élève brillant et remporte le prix d'honneur de philosophie au Concours général. Il entre ensuite à l'�cole normale supérieure en 1848 et est reçu premier à l'agrégation de lettres de 1851 .Edmond About est également un critique d'art acerbe, très disposé à railler les peintres d'avant-garde. Ses comptes rendus de Salon en 1855 et 1857, d'une savoureuse verve comique, éreintent notamment les prétentions du réalisme de Gustave Courbet et appellent à la prudence face à ce qu'il considère comme une brèche ouverte à l'anarchie dans l'art. Il fonda alors Le 19ème siècle dont il devient rédacteur en chef .Edmond About est aussi un auteur comique tant il sait manier la satire. Il connaît la célébrité grâce à ses nouvelles au style vif, clair et concis, et à ses romans qui évoquent des situations imaginaires, souvent inspirées par les progrès de la science. Mariages de Paris (1856), Le Roi des montagnes (1857), L'Homme à l'oreille cassée (1862) ou Les Mariages de province (1868) sont autant de succès d'édition .�lu le 24 janvier 1884 membre de l'Académie française, il meurt moins d'un an plus tard, peu de temps avant le jour prévu pour sa réception, à l'âge de cinquante-six ans. Le roman Le 1er janvier 1853, les domestiques de l'hôtel de Sanglié à Paris voient la duchesse Mlle Germaine, malade et dont le père est ruiné, aller vendre sa bague au mont-de-piété. Mme de Chermidy lui fait épouser Don Diego pour l'argent. Ils vont en Italie où Germaine se refait une santé. Extrait: Le 1er janvier 1853, vers les neuf heures du matin, tous les domestiques de l'hôtel tenaient sous le vestibule un congrès tumultueux. L'intendant du baron, M. Anatole, venait de leur distribuer leurs étrennes. Le maître d'hôtel avait reçu cinq cents francs, le valet de chambre deux cent cinquante. Le moins favorisé de tous, le marmiton, contemplait avec une tendresse inexprimable deux beaux louis d'or tout neufs. Il y avait des jaloux dans l'assemblée, mais pas un mécontent, et chacun disait en son langage que c'est plaisir de servir un maître riche et généreux. Ces messieurs formaient un groupe assez pittoresque autour d'une des bouches du calorifère. Les plus matineux avaient déjà la grande livrée; les autres portaient encore le gilet à manches, qui est la petite tenue des domestiques. Le valet de chambre était tout de noir habillé, avec des chaussons de lisière; le jardinier ressemblait à un villageois endimanché; le cocher était en veste de tricot et en chapeau galonné; le suisse, en baudrier d'or et en sabots. On apercevait çà et là, le long des murs, un fouet, une étrille, un bâton à cirer, une tète de loup, et des plumeaux dont je ne sais pas le nombre.Le maître dormait jusqu'à midi, en homme qui a passé la nuit au club: on avait bien le temps de se mettre à l'ouvrage. Chacun faisait d'avance emploi de son argent, et les châteaux en Espagne allaient bon train. Tous les hommes, petits et grands, sont de la famille de Perrette qui portait un pot au lait. Avec ça et ce que j'ai de côté, disait le maître d'hôtel, j'arrondirai ma rente viagère. On a du pain sur la planche, Dieu merci ! et l'on ne se laissera manquer de rien sur ses vieux jours.
