Allerdings gibt es noch ungeahnt große unterirdische Produktionsanlagen, um lebende Kampfmaschinen herzu-stellen - nach dem Vorbild von Gardanto, dem Hüter von Tarrem III. Er berichtet ihnen von einer Art Überfall einer Rasse namens Eloy - und überzeugt sie davon, dass sie zunächst das Geheimnis der Eloy ergründen müssen. Sie springen mit dem Gaarson-Gate dorthin, wo die Eloy vor zweihundert Jahren herkamen. Die Station ist stark beschädigt, kann aber von ihnen repariert werden - und der Stationscomputer ist nach anfänglicher Feindschaft auf ihrer Seite. Mittels Nanosonden erforschen sie ihre Umgebung und finden seltsame Vorgänge vor auf einem planetengroßen Mond. Sie schicken ein Modul, eine Art Miniraumschiff, testhalber hinüber. Und dann macht sich Cora Stajnfeld gemeinsam mit John Millory und Gardanto selber mit einem Modul auf den Weg.
