About the Book

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, AIDS, Kidney disease and cancers are the leading causes of death worldwide. An estimated 36 million people die from such diseases each year; this represents roughly two out of three deaths globally. Eighty percent of these fatalities occur in developing countries. The statistics are staggering, yet millions of these deaths are preventable. This is an urgent global health issue that demands analysis of gaps in NCD research, new policies and practices, and ac-tionable recommendations to close the gaps. NCDs account for over 60% of deaths from diseases worldwide, approximately 36 million annually. A disproportionate number - 80% (2010) occurring in low- and middle-income nations. As many of those who die are of work-ing age, the economic impact is enormous. As the populations of developing nations grow, they are affected by an ever-increasing share of this financial burden. By 2050, the number of people over the age of 60 years worldwide will probably double, the authors explain. Com-bine this with greater urbanization and you have a steep rise in NCD rates. It is concluded that the cumulative CVD costs in developing nations are expected to exceed $7 trillion between 2011 and 2025, or almost $500 billion annually. The World Economic Forum, concluded that: "until now, we've been unable to put a figure on what the World Health Organization (WHO) calls the 'world's biggest killers.' This study shows that families, countries and economies are losing people in their most productive years. The numbers indicate that non-communicable diseases have the potential to not only bankrupt health systems but to also put a brake on the global economy. Tackling this issue calls for joint action by all actors of the public and private sectors. "This book will be of interest to practitioners, scholars, and students in public health as well as those framing and implementing health policies in the private and public sectors. Lastly it will explore Predisposing factors for the increasing prevalence & challenges for pre-vention of NCD, Web of Causation model, Web of Causation is devised to address chronic disease, primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and control of NCD, Risk Factors and control of risk factors of NCDS and magnitude of the problem. If the problem of NCDs is not addressed will contribute to a global cost of just five non-communicable diseases will reach over $48 trillion over the next twenty years. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), diabetes, cancer, stroke, Kidney failure are major contribu-tors, thus have become the main threat to global health. A compact body of scientific evi-dence for preventive action against CVD, Cancer and diabetes has been made by WHO, United Nations, CDC, Public Health England and many others to fight on reducing the mortal-ity rates globally. Important political initiatives from the United Nations and roadmaps for ac-tion from the World Health Organization will contribute to the battle against NCDs; however, even for those who work in clinical practice there is a definite need to become engaged.
