Going Sane in San Francisco is based on a true story about two brothers from a San Francisco entertainment family. One brother, Steve Silver, was a gay man who married a woman months before dying of AIDS to bury the truth about his sexuality and became fabulously wealthy by creating Beach Blanket Babylon, the longest running stage show in America. His brother Roger, who grew up despised by their social-climbing mother, was eventually disowned by his brother. The book explores the inner workings of greed, manipulation, deceit, control, the music and theater businesses, drugs and drug smuggling, the Grand Jury, family betrayal, San Francisco society, the city of San Francisco, the blackest of black widows, fame, death, a murder in Mexico, love, sex, emotional survival, and redemption.
About the Author: Roger Silver is a native San Franciscan who grew up in the Marina District on Baker Street. He is the son of Louis Silver, an entrepreneur and civic rebel, and Claire Bencich, a poor Croatian girl from a big family who emigrated from Split, Yugoslavia as a child to the mission district of San Francisco. His brother, Steve Silver, created Beach Blanket Babylon, the longest running cabaret show in America - seen by over six million people since it opened its doors in 1974. Roger Silver writes passionate prose, poetry and lyrics, and has written songs recorded by Journey, Carlos Santana, Eric Martin (Mr. Big), Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, and three-time Emmy Award winner Jon Close. Mr. Silver is the proud father of four children - Louie, who passed away as a child; Nick who lives in San Francisco and graduated from UCLA and the Haas Business School at UC Berkeley; Leigh, who lives in San Francisco and graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder, and received her teaching credential at the University of San Francisco; and Gillian, who also lives in San Francisco graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder. Mr. Silver was educated at Lowell High School in San Francisco, City College of San Francisco, and attended San Jose State University, where he majored in English and Journalism. Mr. Silver has produced and co-written fourteen songs and six poems for the book. In addition, he has written the screenplay to accompany Going Sane in San Francisco. He now spends most of his time as an encaustic painter and continues to write.
