Providing all the relevant subject matter of the Grand Canyon (see below for a table of contents), this two-volume treatise is an expansion of another work I wrote and published: GRAND CANYON: A Rim-to-River Time Machine. The main difference between the two is the larger treatise takes the reader into the deep interior of the canyon. Thus, providing essential trail descriptions and information about some of the Grand Canyon's numerous routes from the rim to the river. For those who are not only interested in reading and comprehending the many facets of the canyon's process of creation but also hiking into the canyon, the Interpretive Rim-to-River Guided Tour's subject matter is presented in an easy to read and comprehending writing style. Apart from the general information such as geology, natural and human history, the text also includes suggestions geared to recommended vistas along the rim, hotels, places to eat, among other miscellaneous and useful information to the visitor. More importantly, this text is based on interpretation. In other words, a style of learning that provides all the relevant facts. Given this modality of a higher standard of edification, this is what the National Park Service says about an interpretative manner of sharing information with visitors: "Interpretation is driven by a philosophy that charges interpreters to help audiences care about park resources. Interpretation establishes the value of preserving park resources by helping people discover the meanings and significance associated with those resources. This competency requires interpreters at all levels to understand the core definition of interpretation, the professional standards for interpretation, the purpose of interpretation, how interpretation can be measured, and how successful interpretation works. These understandings continually evolve and increase in sophistication throughout an interpreter's career." This declaration is precisely what this anthology text is all about. That said, there is a legion of books written about the Grand Canyon and this is another effort, but with a difference. Namely, an anthology, in the guise of an encyclopedia entails all the essentials (and then some). Like any encyclopedia, the reader chooses what to read or ignore. Thus, a focus on chapter and subject material that meets one's interest. About the Author: After being Honorably Discharged from the Navy (submarine service), Rich Holtzin has lived in the West and Southwest for over four decades. Earning three academic degrees in Eastern and Western Philosophy, for some thirty years, he made a living as an outdoors educator and interpreter teaching a variety of geosciences, human, and natural history geared to the Colorado Plateau Province. Additionally, Rich was a professional studio and stage musician and taught guitar and music theory, including composing two soundtracks for the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Parks; a high school Educational Assistant and Substitute Teacher; a Commercial Pilot flying a variety of aircraft; a professional Photographer; a GPS surveyor and Topographical Mapper for the U. S. Forest Service; a Planetarium Control Room operator; a museum docent; and the Coconino County Sheriff's Office. What Rich is more enthused about, however, is serving in the role of an Interpretive Guide and Educator for the Grand Canyon Field Institute (a National Park Service endorsed outreach program (http: //bit.ly/1D6YS1u). He was also an instructor at Northern Arizona University and Yavapai College (respectively, Flagstaff and Prescott), as well as the owner of a Southwest eco and cultural tourism enterprise.
