Und: all das hat so wenig Beziehung zu seinem Wesenhaften, zu seiner inneren Welt und'zu seinem Vollbringen. Vor allem aber: wenn es an der Zeit sein wird, dann wird der Berufene, der es vermag, hier Neues zu sehen und das Alte anders zu erschauen und zu ge stalten, nicht auf sich warten lassen. Dieses Buch will anderes: will von dem Gl�cksfall meiner Existenz berichten, der "gustav Mahler hie�; will nur erz�hlen, was ich selbst an ihm und durch ihn erlebt habe und nur so, wie ich es erleben durfte. Ein anderer wird sein Mahlererlebnis auf andere Weise, wird es besser oder schlechter ver m�gen. Wenn dieses Buch einen Wert hat, so liegt er darin, da� es, wie es nun einmal ist und mit allem, was an ihm auszusetzen sein mag, eines f�r sich in Anspruch nehmen kann: es h�tte von keinem anderen geschrieben werden k�nnen.

Man wird in diesen Bl�ttern, so wenig biographisch sie gehalten sind, doch die wichtigsten Phasen von Mahlers Leben und zumindest die seiner letzten 15 Jahre finden; wenigstens so weit sie in Be ziehung zu seinem sch�pferischen Tun stehen. Meine Absicht war freilich urspr�nglich nur die, einmal eine ausf�hrliche, m�glichst intensive und, soweit ich es nach Mahlers eigenen Worten ver mochte, m�glichst in seinem Sinn gehaltene Darstellung seiner Werke zu versuchen; ganz untheoretisch und unanalytisch, weil er all diese Obduktionen einer k�nstlerisch organischen Sch�pfung erbittert ha�te. Und die: bei solcher Darstellung den Menschen Mahler auszuschalten; haupts�chlich deshalb, weil es ja seine T ragik war, da� w�hrend seines Lebens immer wieder seine Werke durch die fanatisch fortrei�ende Kraft, die beklemmende, bet�rende, bannende und befreiende Macht dieses Menschen verdeckt wurden, der als Dirigent vor ihnen stand und der sie gleichzeitig zum tiefsten Eindruck hob und sie vergessen machte; da� dieser gro�e Dirigent immer im Zweifel war, ob er als solcher oder wegen der reinen Wirkung seiner Tonsch�pfung gefeiert worden war, und weil er schlie�lich so weit kam, all seine Erfolge f�r mi�verstandene Dirigentenerfolge zu halten oder zumindest f�r solche, die nicht blo� in seinem Werk, sondern in allem Fesselnden und Bewegenden seiner gro�en Per s'�nlichkeit begr�ndet waren. Deshalb wollte ich zuerst den Versuchmachen, nur von diesen Werken zu sprechen und nur f�r ihre reine, von allem "privat Pers�nlichen losgel�ste Wirkung durch Dar stellung einzutreten. Aber schon das ist mir, f�rchte ich, nicht ganz gelungen auch wenn ich alles derartig, Private' ausgeschaltet zu haben hoffe, konnte ich es mir doch nicht versagen, �ber die Entstehung mancher dieser Sch�pfungen zu erz�hlen, was ich wu�te, irgendein auffallendes Wort Mahlers anzuf�hren, das, in der blitzartigen Sch�rfe seiner aphoristisch zuschleifenden Art zu sprechen, manches aufhellt, was sonst leicht unverstanden bliebe, und auch da und dort �ber die Schicksale der Werke zu berichten, und �ber die Art, wie Mahler selber diese Schicksale trug. Schon das f�hrte 1mmer wieder zum Menschen Mahler hin. 'w�hrend der Arbeit aber wurde es mir zum unabweisbaren Bed�rfnis, auch von Mahlers reproduk tivem Schaffen zu erz�hlen, aus den zehn gro�en Jahren der Wiener Hofoper wenigstens das festzuhalten, was f�r so viele zu unver lierbarer Bereicherung geworden ist. Von hier aus aber wiesen so viele Einzelheiten auf den Menschen, ja, so viele Dinge w�ren ohne Eingehen auf seine menschliche Art gar nicht darzustellen gewesen, da� ich die Erz�hlung dieses Erlebnisses "mahler auch durch das Bild seines Wesens, wie ich es gesehen habe, zu erg�nzen hatte.
