Not illustrated. 1833 Excerpt: ...but loo often occur of its malignancy and mortality, The general term, Scarlet Fever, includes every degree of throat dis'emper, ulcerous, putrid or malignant, varying in degree only. It is to be lamented, that tbe throat distemper, (properly scarlet lever, ) is oftni limes so poorly understood, as the accounts of its mortality every where exhibit. Although these diseases are one, (tt least in practical view, ) yet the modern writers or compilers, have written so profusely in description, and -o variously on those diseases--and perhaf? inexperienced therein themselves'oo, that the professional man of the present clay; who may be inexperienced himself, meets with great perplexity in finding the best course to pursue, and oftentimes falls very far short of his wishes. Besides, it must be expected from another consideration, that those diseases should mislead the Physician until otherwise advised--because they, in the first appearance, are so calculated to mislead the well informed, until experience teaches them their true nature. They are introduced generally under the appearance of inflammatory disease.indicating treatment similar to typhus fever, which of course, if adopted, will fail of success, and frequently mortality will ensue, because the scarlet fever, '- in fact, a cold phlegmatic disease, nd if treated as such, will be attended CO with success. The mild, warm, perspirativc treatment such as will not irritate and disturb the course which nature assumes to expel the disease, will be the most successful. But the drastic, emetic, cathartic, nitrous, sweating medicines, and blistering and. bleediDgare all the reverse of what is the true nature and course to be pursued with success.
