Hermann Burger gehort zu den wichtigsten Stimmen der deutschsprachigen Literatur des ausgehenden 20. Jahrhunderts. Am 28. Februar 2009 kehrte sein Todestag zum zwanzigsten Mal wieder. Zu diesem Anlass veranstaltete das Deutsche Seminar der Universitat Zurich die Tagung -Ein Hermann aus Wortern-. Die Beitrage werden erganzt durch den Erstabdruck von Burgers bis dato unveroffentlichtem Vortrag -Poetische und wissenschaftliche Sprache- (1983), in dem der habilitierte Germanist von einem fur seine Schriftstellerei fundamentalen Konflikt berichtet - vom Dilemma dessen, der als poeta doctus stets zwischen den beiden -Ausdrucksformen- Dichtung und Wissenschaft steht. "Hermann Burger, der Wortgewaltige, der gegen die Sprachlosigkeit kampft, der Gelehrte, der sich selbst beim Schreiben zuschaut, der Monomane, der sich nach menschlicher Nahe sehnt - diese und zahlreiche andere Aspekte des Burgerschen Kosmos wurden an einem Kolloquium zum 20. About the Author: Hermann Burger, am 10. Juli 1942 in Aarau geboren und in Menziken aufgewachsen, gehört zu den wichtigsten Stimmen der deutschsprachigen Literatur des ausgehenden 20. Jahrhunderts. Er studierte Germanistik, Kunstgeschichte und Didaktik in Zürich, promovierte 1973 über Paul Celan und habilitierte sich 1975 mit einer Studie zur zeitgenössischen Schweizer Literatur. Anschließend war er Privatdozent für deutsche Literatur an der ETH Zürich und Feuilletonredaktor beim Aargauer Tagblatt. Sein literarisches Debüt gab er 1967 mit dem Gedichtband Rauchsignale, dem 1970 die Prosastücke Bork folgten. Den internationalen Durchbruch schaffte er 1976 mit dem Roman Schilten. Schulbericht zuhanden der Inspektorenkonferenz. Für sein weiteres Werk wurde er wiederholt ausgezeichnet: 1980 erhielt er den Conrad Ferdinand Meyer-Preis, 1983 für seinen zweiten Roman Die Künstliche Mutter (1982) den Friedrich Hölderlin-Preis und 1985 für die Erzählung Die Wasserfallfinsternis von Badgastein den Ingeborg Bachmann-Preis. 1986 war er Gastdozent für Poetik an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main. Sein letztes großes Projekt, die Brenner-Tetralogie, kam über den ersten Band, Brunsleben, und das (posthum veröffentlichte) Fragment des zweiten Bandes, Menzenmang, nicht mehr hinaus: Hermann Burger starb am 28. Februar 1989 auf Schloss Brunegg an einer Überdosis Medikamente. Magnus Wieland, geb. 1978, Studium der Germanistik, Philosophie und Kunstgeschichte in Zürich. Seither Arbeit an einer Dissertation zu Jean Pauls Schreibtechnik. Simon Zumsteg, geb. 1973, Studium der Germanistik, Philosophie und Geschichte der Neuzeit in Zürich und Wien. 2003-2004 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (SNF) bei der Edition des 10. Bandes von Ernst Cassirers nachgelassenen Manuskripten und Texten. Seither Arbeit an einer Dissertation zu Hermann Burgers Poetologie.
