About the Book

THE HOUSE ON RUE DE LA REPUBLIQUE It is 1962 and Leah Caldwell, wife of a United States military career man, and mother of three children finds that growing up in the deep South, raised by dysfunctional parents leaves her ill equipped to cope with the foreign intrigue of French life. The house in which they live has a violent history since it is the reincarnation of the chateau that served as headquarters for the German soldiers during World War II. It has life, a spirit as if it were human. Leah recognizes this attraction from the first and is captivated by the house. However, when strange and unsettling occurrences begin, her fascination with the house turns to fear and loathing. She begins to questions her sanity. Is she really crazy like her husband and friend think? Alone behinid shuttered windows and doors, living in fear, tormented by memories of her tragic life she has anticipated. Her sexually oriented husband, Gare, no longer desires her and is cold and indifferent to the family. Leah seeks several avenues of escape, trips to Paris with Allie, her attractive friend and neighbor, to flea markets, and fashion houses. But eventually she has to return to the house she feels is evil. When she meets Michele, an ex-fashion model, who grew up in teh French neighborhood, she finds hope. Together they set out to find an explanation for the sounds, the footsteps, and the apparition, which become progressively bolder in the house. Despite the negative reaction from Madam Richardin, Michele's mother, they pay a call on the gypsy camp for answers. Why is Madam Richardin opposed to their friendship? The truck left in the attic, its contents, what does it mean? How is Michele involved? Yet something about the house is pulling Michele upstairs, to the unused maze of rooms. Only Madam Richardin knows the answer. As the story unravels Nazi love/hate passions of the past where a young French girl is stoned to death because of her association with the enemy brings full circle the meaning of unrest in the house and discloses the secreta of Madam Richardin. The story told, Leah, no longer afraid, prepares for the plane trip home to America. The happiness she feels is short lived when she discovers infidelity in her marriage, betrayal in her good friend, and a fatal accident which changes everything. The story ends as Leah prepares to leave the hospital where she has been confined for months. There has been much sadness, hurt and disappointment, but she has overcome each obstacle and looks forward to a better future with her loving children at her side.
