I mean those which are founded on some definite portion or passage of literature or whose themes have parallel literary renderings or treatments. Some are character portraits as Shakespeare's Ophelia, by A. Seifert. Others represent situations, incidents and events. I wish to speak of two modern masterpieces of the latter class, Dante's Dream, by Dante Gabriel Ros- setti and Captive Andromache, by Sir Frederick Leighton. Both are artists of the modern English school when at its best. The former was born at London in 1828, and died in 1882; the latter born in Scarborough in 1830, died in 1896. The original of the Dante's Dream is in Liverpool. Photographs and photogravure reproductions of it are very effective and satisfactory. To really enjoy and appreciate this picture presupposes a reading of Dante's La Vita Nuova or New Life and an appreciative, realizing sympathy Some good treatments of other Shakspeare character! are King Lear by A. Heckel, Hamlet by William Morris Hunt, Sir John Falstaff and the FalstafT series of seven pictures by Ed. Grutzner, Macbeth and the Witches by C. V. Hafften, Cordelia by Gabriel Max. Dante's Dream for his rapturous, sighing admiration and frenzied, sobbing love for the blessed Beatrice, So gentle and so pure, One of the beautiful angels of Heaven. Like Dante, Rossetti first dreamed his picture and then painted his dream?in line and color instead of words?and he expresses much of the vigorous, rich, poetical exuberance of Dante. Our best translation of the New Life is by Rossetti. He wrought himself into the half mystical idealism of Dante with its hints of sombre realism, and into the spirit of his weeping phanta...
