The role of social norms in personal mate preference, partner satisfaction and perceived likelihood to marry the current partner." Submitted by Chan Chai Kuk, Melanie for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in July 2007. The current study investigated the role played by social norms in people's mate preference, partner satisfaction and perceived likelihood to marry their current dating partner. According to the social identity theory (Tajfel, 1982), group norm should affect high identifiers' behaviors. Recent research findings (Wan, Chiu, Tam et al., in press) further showed that perceived norms (people's estimation of normative preference) predicted behaviors better than actual norms (the aggregation of people's actual preference). In the present study, we hypothesized that (i) the association between perceived norm and personal mate preference as well as the association between actual norm and personal mate preference would be greater when gender group identification was strong; and (ii) when considering the possibility of marrying one's current dating partner, satisfaction with the partner's performance on attributes with high perceived normative importance would be more predictive than satisfaction with the partner's performance on attributes with high actual normative importance. To test these hypotheses, we first obtained perceived normative mate preference from 200 university students. In the main study, we collected 72 dating college students' personal mate preference, satisfaction of partners, perceived likelihood to marry their current partner and gender group identification. From a subset of these participants, we obtained the evaluations of their partners from their partners' friends (N=32). Results indicated that for male participants who highly identified with university male students, their personal mate preference was associated with both perceived norm and actual norm, but the association with the former was significant but only marginal for the latter. The same associations, however, could not be observed among female participants. The first hypothesis was partially supported. The results also showed that participants' satisfaction with their partner's performance on attributes with high perceived normative desirability better predicted their perceived likelihood to marry their current partner than their satisfaction with the attributes with high actual normative desirability. The second hypothesis was supported. The current study demonstrated the moderating role of gender group identification in the association between perceived norm and personal mate preference in male participants. It also showed the importance of perceived versus actual norm in people's perceived likelihood to marry their current partner.
