Der Mensch kann sich in seiner Noth vermoge der Sprache nicht mehr zu erkennen geben, also sich nicht wahrhaft mittheilen: bei diesem dunkel gefuhlten Zustande ist die Sprache uberall eine Gewalt fur sich geworden, welche nun wie mit Gespensterarmen die Menschen fasst und schiebt, wohin sie eigentlich nicht wollen; sobald sie mit einander sich verstandigen und zu einem Werke zu vereinigen suchen, erfasst sie der Wahnsinn der allgemeinen Begriffe, ja der reinen Wortklange [...]. Diese bereits 1876 in seiner Vierten Unzeitmassigen Betrachtung geausserte Sprachskepsis Nietzsches verweist wie kaum ein anderes Dokument auf den Kern von Tschechows Werk und gleichzeitig auf eines der Hauptthemen des naturalistischen Dramas allgemein: die gestorte Kommunikation 'gestorter' Individuen. Glaubte das burgerliche Bildungstheater des 18. Jahrhunderts noch an eine ideale Kommunikationsgemeinschaft autonomer Individuen und die sprachliche Fassbarkeit der Welt, bestimmen im naturalistischen Drama die schonungslose Darstellung des 'alltaglichen Wahns', ein absolutes Unvermogen der Figuren, ihren Gefuhlen verbal Ausdruck zu verleihen, und Themen wie Kontaktlosigkeit, Isolation und Langeweile das Geschehen. Nicht langer kennzeichnen den Menschen die Fahigkeit zur freien Personlichkeitsentfaltung, zur ehrlichen Kommunikation und zum bewussten Sich- Entschliessen. Bedingt durch den gesellschaftlichen Wandel (Industriekapitalismus etc.) andert sich die Auffassung vom Menschen als eine geschlossenen Personlichkeit. Das erweiterte Weltbild stellt das Individuum in ganz neue Bezuge 'ausser sich', und der freie Entschluss wird durch die gesellschaftliche Determination des Handelns abgedrosselt.Insbesondere das Kunstlerdrama Die Mowe (Urauffuhrung: 17.10.1896 am Kaiserlichen Alexandertheater in St. Petersburg) des russischen Dramatikers Anton Tschechow greift diese gesellschaftliche Entwicklung auf und zeichnet ein beklemmendes Portrait orientierungsloser Individuen, zwischen denen ein wahrer menschlicher Kontakt unmoglich scheint. Auch ihre Flucht in die Kunst soll sich als Sackgasse erweisen. Anstatt ihnen den Weg zu sich selbst und den Mitmenschen zu ebnen, betaubt sie doch nur die innere Leere, das 'Ennui', und verhindert somit gerade die ehrliche Auseinandersetzung mit sich selbst. Tschechows Figuren leiden an unterdruckter Sehnsucht, an ihrer Zukunftslosigkeit, an der Ode ihres Daseins, an ihrer Ichbefangenheit, an ihrem Versagen und an ihren unerfullten Lie
