About the Book

The uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources has created many ecological imbalances and deterioration in the quality of environment, leading to several environmental problems. These problems are further compounded by unprecedented population growth, industrial development and rapid urbanisation.
This book attempts to study the process of urbanisation and its impact on environmental degeneration in India, with special reference to Bhopal region of Madhya Pradesh. Identifying the environmental problems of the region, it analyzes the impact of urban growth, industrialization, population characteristics, agricultural development and transportation on its environmental degeneration. The book contains 17 coloured maps and 18 photoplates.

About the Author

Sonali Sharma (nee Vishwakarma) earned her M.Phil and Ph.D. in Geography in 1998 and 2005, respectively. She has worked as a compere for child programmes—Bal Sabha and Bal Gopal—aired at Akashawani, Shivpuri. Also, she has presented a paper on `Changing Agricultural Landuse Profile in Bhopal Region: A Spatiotemporal Analysis,' in a national seminar. Santosh Shukla is Director, Population Research Centre; Dean, School of Applied Sciences; Member of the Academic Council; and Former Head, Department of General and Applied Geography, Dr. Harisingh Gour Central University, Sagar. He has numerous papers and four books to his credit. He has participated in over 50 seminars and has delivered about 100 lectures in orientation and refresher courses organized by UGC Academic Staff Colleges run by various universities.
