Not illustrated. 1921 Excerpt: ... butyl alcohol or the butyl alcohol itself in the manufacture of pyroxylin plastics. The output of the combined solvents (acetone, butyl alcohol, and ethyl alcohol) during the latter part of 1920 amounted to about 1,000,000 pounds per month. The raw material, shelled corn, is first thoroughly sterlized and then fermented by means of bacteria (Bacillus butylicus). The products obtained, fr, om this fermentation are about 10 parts of ethyl alcohol, 60 of butyl alcohol, and 30 parts of acetone. These products are separated by fractional distillation before being put on the market. This process of producing butyl alcohol is known as the Weizmann process and is covered by United States patents, which are owned by the Commercial Solvents Corporation..;.;i, .., ., Foreign production.--Acetone and butyl alcohol were produced, by this process during the war by the British Acetone Co., at Toronto, Canada. The production of acetone by this process in Canada had reached 200 tons per month at the close of the war. On the basis that two parts of butyl alcohol are produced for one part of acetone, this would represent a production of 400 tons of butyl alqohol per month. A plant to convert butyl alcohol into ethyl methyl ketonej which was a satisfactory solvent for the British explosive cordite, had just commenced operation at the signing of the armistice.. This plant for production of acetone has been closed since the signing or" the armistice, ., Imports into the United States, --Imports of butyl alcohol are not shown separately in Commerce and Navigation. In recent years (1919) imports have been combined with fusel oil, or.amylic alcohol. During 1914, Pickrell shows that only 482 pounds of butyl alcohol, with a value of $287, were imported from Germany., Prices.---...
