About the Book

This book is intended for students studying for BTEC National or GCSE. It also covers the syllabus for BTEC First and the information processing parts of examinations such as those for RSA, AAT and ABT and will also be of interest to anyone who wishes to know about information technology. The book looks at information technology and its use in business, society, and education. Computers have been in use for nearly forty years now and this usage has increased dramatically since the introduction of the microcomputer which has made information technology available to all who wish to use it. In business computers have been in use since the 1960s being first used by large companies. The introduction of the microcomputer has spread this usage down to the smallest business. Computers are increasingly being used to control processes and machinery thus making it unnecessary for many mundane jobs to be carried out by human beings. In secondary education microcomputers have been making an impact since 1982 when the first BBC microcomputers became available. The first four chapters discuss hardware, software, files and languages. Chapter 5 looks at the use of computers in business and concludes with a study of the use of computers in Austin Rover. In chapter 6, 7 and 8 text processing, information storage and retrieval and spreadsheets are discussed. Chapters 9 and 10 look at communications and networks; systems analysis and personnel are discussed in chapters 11 and 12. Chapter 13 looks at artificial intelligence and expert systems, chapter 14 takes a brief look at how computers are affecting society, chapter 15 looks at the use of computers in education and finally chapter 16 takes a look at the use of computers in the High Street. A number of chapters have questions at their ends, these are for the reader to check that they have grasped the main points of the chapter. Some chapters also have assignments which will require a more detailed look at a particular aspect of information technology.
