About the Book

This timely book is a complete and up-to-date reference for the field of infrared fiber optics. Written by an expert in the field with nearly 30 years of experience, it includes a historical recounting of the development of IR fiber optics as well as a summary of the best fibers in each of the three categories of IR fibers: crystalline, glass, and hollow waveguides. The theoretical aspects of these types of fibers are discussed, and four chapters are devoted to each of the main types of IR fibers available today-fluoride glass, chalcogenide glass, crystalline, and hollow waveguides. These chapters are designed to familiarize the reader not only with the properties of each fiber but also their limitations and shortcomings.

What truly sets this book apart from any other is its comprehensive look at current and future IR fiber applications, including fiber optic chemical and temperature sensors, laser power delivery, fiber amplifiers, and new and emerging applications such as photonic bandgap fibers. Scientists, engineers, and business people will learn about their myriad uses and possible uses in telecommunications, medicine and surgery, and sensors, among others.

About The Author
James A. Harrington is currently Professor of Ceramic and Materials Engineering at Rutgers University. He has more than 30 years of research experience in the area of optical properties of solids. Since 1977, he has worked on all aspects of infrared fibers including fabrication, characterization, and applications. He is generally recognized as one of the world`s leading experts in this continually evolving field.

Prior to joining the Fiber Optic Materials Research Program at Rutgers University in 1989, he was Director of Infrared Fiber Operations for Heraeus LaserSonics, where he led the research and development of infrared fiber optic delivery systems for CO2 laser surgery. He was the inventor of both the hollow sapphire and hollow glass waveguides, which today are being used as CO2 laser delivery systems in a variety of surgical applications. Before joining Heraeus LaserSonics, he was the Program Manager for IR fiber optics at Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, CA.

His current research interests include the development of a new class of ultralow-loss photonic bandgap HGWs, and the fabrication of HGW coherent image bundles for infrared imaging. Other research activities include the development of diffusing-tip silica fibers for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and prostate surgery, thin film coatings for hollow waveguides, IR fiber delivery systems for FEL medical lasers, and IR fibers for use in C02 laser-threat warning receivers.
