La legge n. 92/2019 dà l'avvio all'insegnamento trasversale, nelle scuole di ogni ordine e grado, della nuova educazione civica. Ogni disciplina potrà dare il proprio contributo, ed è auspicabile che anche l'insegnante di matematica sia parte attiva dell'insegnamento interdisciplinare. Infatti, la matematica non serve solo a far di conto o, all'opposto, non è semplicemente la disciplina astratta per antonomasia, ma può essere una cruciale e formidabile leva di sviluppo intellettuale, culturale e sociale per far sì che gli studenti di oggi diventino i bravi, colti, critici e indipendenti cittadini di domani. A condizione, però, che si operi all'interno di un contesto educativo forte e orientato all'inclusione degli studenti con bisogni educativi speciali, compresi quindi gli allievi con disabilità; solo in questo modo tutti gli studenti della classe, studiando e imparando fianco a fianco coi compagni più fragili, svilupperanno doti di apertura, accettazione e solidarietà verso ogni tipo di diversità, come è necessario per formare i pieni cittadini per la società in divenire. Il presente libro propone dunque idee, attività ed esperienze perché la matematica, insegnata nella scuola secondaria di primo grado, contribuisca ad educare alla cittadinanza e all'inclusione. I percorsi didattici delineati con questo scritto condurranno dalla matematica delle questioni sociali, del gioco, dalla sua storia, dall'approccio interculturale all'elemento delle generalizzazioni, per contribuire a sviluppare per gli studenti una visione più ampia sui problemi emergenti sia sociali sia individuali.
